Decorative processing of the ACP

ACP can be painted, but only those that have the covering on the polyester base. The most suitable for painting are acrylic or two-component polyurethane paints, car nitroenamels and synthetic paints. For the painting of the back side of the ACP it is advisable beforehand to sand the ACP surface by emery cloth or to etch it chemically and then to cover it with anticorrosion paint base. One can hasten the drying process by putting the panels into the kiln at a temperature not more than 70oC.
It is not recommended to paint PVDF coating, as the polymericfluorine coatings have a very low value of the surface tension force. Only special paints and lacquers like Lumiflon can be used, provided that manufacturer’s recommendations on the planting technology are strictly observed. The polyethylene core of the ECOBOND® panels cannot be painted either due to the same reason.
If it is necessary to make the butt-end of the panel in the color of the front side, one can simply bend the edge of the aluminum sheet from the back side of which the rectangular strip is removed for the width that is equal to the thickness of the ACP sheet minus aluminum thickness.
Other methods of the machine working for getting the painted butt-end of the panel by the turndown methods are shown in the picture.

Methods of the aluminum composite panel edging

The decorative painting of the ECOBOND® panels is applied to make a special color, to lay letterings, images and to eliminate painting defects that may occur because of violation of the recommendations or careless mechanical processing, transportation and installation of the panels.

Painting process
1. Remove carefully the protective film so that you can use it again.
2. Grind the surface with emery cloth No.400 or more or with a grinding machine with fine polishing agent, for example ALTUGLAS POLISH1.
3. Clean the surface with spirit or light solvent, for example with hexane or heptane.
4. Spread a primer layer with the help of a spray gun.
5. Dry the primer completely.
6. Paint the panel. The most appropriate way of painting is with the help of a spray gun or roll. If the requirements to the irregularity of the surface coating of the paint are not very high, you may use a brush.
7. After the paint dried out, spread the second layer. It is necessary for closing the pores in the first layer that provides better anticorrosion properties and evener total layer of the painted surface.
8. After the complete drying of the paint it’s recommended to laminate the panels with the protective film again in order to prevent the painted surface from damages during further processing, transportation and installation.

You may lay the letterings and images with the help of the special masking self-adhesive film ORAMASK 811 produced by ORAFOL company. One can apply a screen-printing on the panels by solvent (ecosolvent) paints for the plastics and by UV-curable ink. Covering with special protective lacquer (on the acrylic or polyurethane-acrylic base) and laminating with a special transparent film, such as ORAGUARD 240, is recommended for a long-term usage of the printed images outdoors (up to 7 years).

Attention: it is recommended to run the preliminary tests for compatibility of the ink with the face coating of the ACP before printing.
